The Spanish monarchy has been sullied by various corruption scandals. They have tried to cover these up over the years, but they are starting to come out in public thanks to foreign journalists and courts. Right now the Swiss public prosecutor's office is investigating an account with 100 million dollars in it belonging to the former Spanish king Juan Carlos I. This money comes from an illegal gift given in 2007 by the Saudi Arabian royal household, in exchange for whitewashing the fundamentalist regime at a summit meeting in Madrid.

Felipe VI, the current king of Spain, renounced political neutrality when he refused to condemn police brutality against the self-determination referendum of 1st October in Catalonia. He made a speech in which he ignored police violence and even congratulated the Spanish police. This speech was the beginning of a campaign by the Spanish authorities to persecute the pro-referendum movement.

Holidays on luxury yachts, big game hunting, lavish parties, gifts... all paid for by the Spanish public. King Juan Carlos' fortune is estimated at over 1,800 million euros. Meanwhile the Covid-19 crisis is ravaging the most vulnerable groups in society, leaving unprecedented rates of poverty. The public cannot go on paying for these luxuries when it is suffering so much. The party's over!
